How do you explain that President Obama, a black man, did better in 2008 with the white working class than Hillary Clinton did in 2016?

Go hang out in a bar in a working class town, where the factories have moved to Mexico or China, where half the storefronts on Main Street are shuttered and a way of life that was once valued is ruined. What was once FDR country is now Trump country.

The strongest predictors of being a Trump voter in 2016

    1) Being a Republican

    2) Being highly sexist

    3) Being significantly racist

    4) Having strong authoritarian tendencies

Also, the demographics of Trump voters suggest it is NOT the forgotten industrial workers who voted for him. It was middle class people (media income about $72,000/year) who liked what Trump was selling.

Obama did so well because he's a phenomenal speaker, who knew what dems and undecided voters wanted to hear. He was a candidate that people wanted to leave the house so they can go out and vote for him. And, also, people wanted to make history by sending a message out to the world that times have changed. If presidents could run for a third term, he would have beaten Trump, imo.

Why is his ethnicity relevant, and whether it's relevant or not, why did you stress it in framing your question?  (There aren't very many people who do NOT know his ethnicity.)

Only as it relates to the ethnicity of some who voted for him but not for Clinton.

I agree.  I don't know why ethnicity matters either. For some reason people want to mention it but they somehow forget the fact that he's also half white.

Oh no, he is black? Oh jeez. Must be colourblindness, what else could it be? Only thing I wonder about, how did he hide it over two terms?

Having troubles reading, or do you just look for something to tell me because you didn't like my comment for you inside your question? I did NOT ask what else could HE be. Anything else ProblemCh1ld? This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at November 30, 2016 8:06 AM MST

It doesn't change the fact that your "Oh no, he is black" is misleading because it gives the impression he's ALL black rather than half and half, so to speak. It would be just as inaccurate as saying he's a white man.

  • According to Obama, he won where Hillary lost because he hit the campaign trail a lot harder than she did. He said she should have campaigned in more places in the swing states.
