I should note that I, as a sports fan (mostly NBA, particularly Los Angeles Lakers), am guilty of the behaviors you describe...;-D...

Oh. I do go when I'm watching the championship game live in the stadium though, no? Pfft. They wouldn't win without my lost voice the day after. Mhmm. Or something like that. But what do I know, right? I'm a blondie. Gwahaha.

When you, your husband, and/or your children  are an alumnus of a college and support the school and athletics program, you can bet "We're going to the national championship" means exactly that.  We're going!!!!  Roll Tide!!

Some people are never part of anything like it; I'm sad for them.

@TM -- You are "part of the athletics program" of your alma mater in the same way you are "part of the movie" when you go purchase a movie ticket. If your alma mater wins a national championship in a sport, you had no more influence upon that than if your favorite movie of a given year wins "Best Picture" at the Academy Awards.

You pay money, and professional entertainers provide you entertainment. That's as far as the relationship goes.

Now, there's nothing wrong with that. People need entertainment in whatever form. But to assert that it's somehow a participatory exercise is misleading.

Without alumni there wouldn't be  sports programs the caliber of the ones we support.  I'm not even talking about ticket sales.

These are our schools and our traditions.  We love them.  And yes, we are going to the championship game.

    Merry Christmas, OS

@TM -- Yep, and if there were no movie ticket buyers, expensive movies like Hollywood blockbusters wouldn't get made either. All that would be available is films made by grad students using VHS-C HandyCams.

If you and a bunch of yours self-identified kin decided to pitch in and buy a $30,000 car, it would probably be a better car than a bunch of other people who pitched in to buy a $5,000 car. Yay, you and your kin.

If it makes you happy, that's fine. I enjoy pulling for the Los Angeles Lakers and the University of Hawaii basketball team.  Some people like to watch soap operas or anime in the original Japanese. But all of us have the same real-world relationship to our entertainment product of choice. Everything else is imagined head canon.

  • I'm glad as hell I'm not part of anything like that to be honest.  Kinda silly IMHO.  Seems no different than parents who live vicariously through their children.

Bless your heart.  It has nothing to do with children.  I'm talking about universities of which I or family members graduated and support as alumi.  You can't understand this any more than I can appreciate that McDonalds is bringing the McRib back. • Who says it has anything to do with children?  It's an analogy.

@TM -- Yep, that money which goes to helping young healthy men end up with severe debilitating injuries and/or Cumulative Trauma Disorder scrambling their brains is the PERFECT way to honor your university and your family members who went there.

Donating money for textbooks, or a new library, or higher teacher pay, or decent offices for graduate students is nice, but it doesn't give nearly the atavistic thrill of watching Your Tribe engage (and win) at ritutalized combat. So you delude yourself into thinking your donations are somehow meaningful beyond how the football team entertains you.

@WW -- While I am not particularly bothered by it, your picture in your answer is borderline with respect to the Terms of Service. Similar pictures have led to controversy in the past. It might be better to restrict them to the Adult/Free-for-All sections.

@WW -- It's not up to me and I don't really care either way. But I recall a similar picture of two women in a similar pose did provoke a great deal of discussion. So JA/the mods may do something or they may not. Just be aware such pictures are controversial.

For some reason, ***my*** "dirty" pictures seem to be allowed with no issue....;-D...

  • How is Bowly anyways?  You get her anything nice for Christmas?   A new lane perhaps?
When will two finally have some of your own?  We all can't wait to hear the pitter-patter of little duck pins.
