    I don't know. I would suspect that it has something to do with the alleged "Christianization" of the Republican Party.

    Actually, Clinton won Virginia and there are lots of states - esp. in the south - that are much redder.

    Virginia was always red until 2008.  I really thought they would swing back in 2016 but not quite but it was less blue that in the past two elections.
