Anyone here have any experience switching a Peerless transaxle from grease packed to oil filled?

I know people do it and they used to come oil filled or grease packed.
An oil bath is unquestionably better that grease packed IMHO.   Just wondering if anyone has done it themselves.  There's brass bushings in them I believe so I know picking a brass/bronze safe gear oil blend is important.

Anyone have anything to say about it?

The oil packed is absolutely the best, the grease gets swept away from the gears and the oil will keep them constantly lubed.

  • Well I pretty much agree.   They only come grease packed these days but they still leave a fill hole but never drill out the drain hole.

I have one garden tractor that is about 12yo and I plan on opening the transaxle anyways to get the old grease out.   I'm kinda just thinking of switching it to GL-1 gear oil.   Prolly a 75w-90.   Not sure though, I might just leave it how it's been and repack with good marine grease.
Oil lubes better, cleans the gears, and is better for inspecting problems but I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with it and if they ever had any issues with oil seeping out since there isn't any real seals on the axle.

Grease seals may not be leakproof enough for a liquid. I used to work on the drive gears on a Yamaha 80cc  4 wheeler from about 1990.  We used a special semi-liquid lubricant from Yamaha that was between a grease and an oil. I put STP oil treatment (a very thick liquid) into my leaky roto-tiller drive and that stopped it from leaking. I don't know if you can get the STP in the thick style anymore, but it worked.

  • Yeah STP or Lucas oil treatments are usually recommended to add to the gear oil to thicken them up for this application.
I'm just entertaining the idea now.  I may just stick to bentonite grease.
