I suspect any woman saying that is either doing so in an insulting way or a flattering way, either way it seemed a dumb thing to say in the case you cited... a man just being a man is just a man.. a strong man does not need to act macho, he doesn't feel the need to constantly prove and redefine his maleness..
A macho man to me is an ignorant one, one who treats others with less respect...
