My maiden name was changed some time ago by my ancestors as well. It happens.
My husband's Grandmother is German and did not change her name (I guess she didn't have to she got married) Her family also did not. But because of WWII she wouldn't say she was of German ancestry. She would say they were High Dutch. (And she only speaks English)
