The war was an excuse to go into Iraq and claim resources there that are important in the world they are setting up. Didn't matter what the intelligence was.

Don't leave out George Tenet, head of the CIA, who was part and parcel of the successful attempt to defraud the American people re WMDs in Iraq. He conveniently resigned when the questions got too close to home. Bush, Cheney, and Tenet - war criminals, all.
It was a profit war and testing ground for new military tactics and systems. Period. It wasn't about oil. It wasn't about WMD. It wasn't about freeing people from a cruel despot.
It was about feeding an entire industry based on selling military supplies and tools and security contracts. The resources and oil were just a little whipped cream on the pie. The Industro-military complexes profits was clearly the main motivation for invading Iraq. Just a testing ground for selling the military brass new toys to kill people with and create instability so the demand for their products would remain high.
At the time the whole world believed Iraq had nuclear WMD. Saddam wanted it that way. Because of Iran. We know he did have chemical WMD...he used them on his people. There were Iraqi generals who claimed the WMD went to Syria.
Actually no. very few believed they did https://news.vice.com/article/the-cia-just-declassified-the-document-that-supposedly-justified-the-iraq-invasion
