Are there planes that fly somewhere else than in the air ?

Airplane fly in the air.

Riverboats sail on a river
Ocean liners sail in the ocean

Riverboats and Ocean liners need their prefix to specify where they sail but why does Airplane have a such a prefix if there arent any planes that fly somewhere else?

So where do [not-Air]planes fly ???

Blimps and hot air balloons fly. They go where we want them too.

Yes, the planes build for space tourism will fly in space, or close to it.

  • A submarine is actually more like an aircraft in it's operation than a boat.   The principles of them is basically an airplane and dirigible applied to a liquid based environment instead of a gaseous one.   Still it's based on the same basic concepts and rules of fluid dynamics.

There are also different kinds of planes besides airplanes.   Hydroplanes use  inclined planes that are essentially wings to create lift and rise themselves out of the water the same way airplanes do.
