Grandstanding/empty gestures/theatrical and dramatic words/activities. Are any of them substantive and useful? How?

  • Yes and no.   It really depends.
Useful how?  Grandstanding and theatrical/dramatic talk can be useful in leadership role as hype builder and to build a team excitement.  A military squad leader or sport team coach pep talk or amp 'em up.  A manipulative person would find them useful for more nefarious reasons. People in leadership roles might find a certain subdued level of it to  uphold the power image.

Is it useful as platform or policy? If your goal is to manipulate your way to an end then I guess it is to you but you're gonna fail at the position it  gets ya'.

I shall give you an example. Marlon Brando refused an Academy Award and sent a Native American female to reject and protest the treatment of Native Americans. What that shabby shameful treatment has to do with acting I have no idea. I think that was grandstanding. How did it help the cause? Native Americans are still being treated shamefully by their governments. Brando did it to aggrandize himself in my opinion. I am not impressed by empty gestures. It is memorable for its shock value and not for any substantive good it did. Thank you for your reply  Glis.

  • What do you have against Brando?
Do people declining awards just anger you for some reason?
