Whats the difference between utter and mutter when speaking?

    Something uttered is something said at a normal level.  When you mutter, it's something almost whispered.

  • Depends on context.. if you use the word, "utter" when speaking.. that would be very different from muttering :P

    When you say quietly " he is asking baiting questions so he can find out how I argue" that is uttering.

    If you say that in a non understanding way that is muttering.

    'Utter' can only be uttered. but 'mutter' can be uttered and muttered both.
