Await a second referendum
Hello? There are no re-takes. It was a vote, remember? We don't get to re-do this thing.
Hello
Its not over untill the fat lady sings and Article 50 is invoked
Bookmakers are offering odds of 10/1 against another referendum this year
Probably
I don't think the government has the balls to defy the will of the people. There would be civil unrest if they did.
However I'm nervous about them making some kind of lame compromise like keeping the border open in exchange for common market access.
We'd be out on paper, but effectively still in to a large extent. All it takes is a few decades of open borders and the national identity will be gone. Then the U.K. will just be pulled back in to the E.U. because most people will feel European not British. The remainers have lost a battle but they might still win the war.
Brexit isn't enough. We need to encourage other countries to exit too. The only of hope for independence in the long term is to bring down the whole project.
I think maybe a lot of people are looking for a way out
I seriously doubt it can be stopped.
Politicians may be removed from reality but they're not entirely stupid. Well, not all of them anyway. Enough of them will realise that they got into this nasty situation by losing the trust of the electorate and turning the screw too much for too long.
While I don't know what will happen, I can say with certainty that many MPs will be very reluctant to risk adding to their problems by ignoring the vote. If they do, they know they can expect a massive protest vote at the next general election. The results of that could be disastrous for hundreds of MPs and for the parties themselves. I don't see enough of them willing to risk that outcome.
Good points.
A second referendum though would still reflect the will of the people and this time I suspect Remain would win.
The running for cover of some of the Leave protagonists and the realisation that the fiscal losses to the UK economy would probably be far greater than our EU contributions would push sentiment towards Remain.
I have no personal preference for either Leave or Remain
Brexit was a good idea. Europe is going to implode over the next decade.
Yes
The UK would be dragged down with it, Brexit or no Brexit IMO
So do I
The referendum was flawed from the start and not only because it was introduced by Cameron to serve the interests of his own party
The Remainers were being asked to vote in order to get something they already had
Two thirds of voters over the age of 65 voted to leave compared with only one third of young voters voting to leave, meaning the older generation would be responsible for leaving the younger generation with something they did not desire
Similar to the jury system in the courts it placed the onus on members of the public to give a verdict on something most of them in reality knew very little about
It is safe to assume that people who want change are far more likely to go out and vote than those who do not. Given the closeness of the result and the relatively low turnout, there can be no doubt that the majority of British people would prefer to remain
"The Remainers were being asked to vote in order to get something they already had".
Every vote asks people who want the status quo to vote for the status quo. That's democracy.
Young people who think their vote is somehow more important should shut up and respect their elders. Age brings wisdom. 20 somethings thinking they know it all are just insufferably arrogant.
People who didn't vote don't count. They don't deserve a voice. If they had anything worth hearing to say, they would have voted.
The idea that ordinary people just aren't smart enough to make such decisions is typical of the undemocratic elitism that infects the E.U. That kind of sentiment is exactly why remain lost. They disrespected ordinary people. Ordinary people may not be as smart as academics on average, but they're very intuitive. They know when they're being screwed over.
Total nonsense
A 2nd referendum on membership in 10 or 15 years is one thing, reversing the decision before it has even gone through is another.
Democracy is a game that allows conflict to be resolved non violently. Remain lost. If they don't accept it, there will be violence. That's not a threat, just a fact.
