In this year of our Lord two thousand and seventeen has illiteracy been beaten or we gots lots to do?

Okay, that's illiteracy and bad grammar. Gimme a break. I'm trying to make a joke here ;)

  • Grammar is on my mind, every day. I kid you not. I'm a grammar Nazi, but a silent one, at least.
It sure has not been beaten, oh God. Hey, at least you said beaten, and not beat. See how I noticed that? :)

  • In this year of our Lord, anno domini 2017, we have proved that grammar and spelling are no longer necessary. We may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, and we may have elevated laziness to the same level as education, but we can do just fine without them.

Why? Well, see if you can read the next paragraph.

I cnduo't bvleiee taht I culod aulaclty uesdtannrd waht I was rdnaieg. Unisg the icndeblire pweor of the hmuan mnid, aocdcrnig to rseecrah at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mttaer in waht oderr the lterets in a wrod are, the olny irpoamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rhgit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whoutit a pboerlm. Tihs is bucseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey ltteer by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Aaznmig, huh? Yaeh and I awlyas tghhuot slelinpg was ipmorantt! See if yuor fdreins can raed tihs too.

And here's a link to the page.

I can, but slower comprehension. Correct grammar would be at a faster pace relying on accepted norms. I consider this a degradation in speed of communication. i find myself translating. This post was edited by O-uknow at January 14, 2017 11:32 PM MST

  • I agree. But after almost 7 years on sites like this I've learned not to fuss too much.

I've also discovered that my fingers have a mind of their own. No matter how well I think I can write I constantly find errors in my work that certainly didn't come from my brain. I've concluded that my body is trying to pay me back for the arthritis I inflicted on it with all those years of not paying attention to my diet. It's only fair. I deserve to be punished.

I'm sorry to correct you but it should be written two thousand seventeen, not two thousand and seventeen.  So no, we haven't got it licked completely.   :)

Didge, how do you say/write the decimal point in your numbers since you use and at the end of the whole number?
    Such as 2000.17 or 2017.56

  • I just use a full stop. A period. That's the accepted method. It may be possible to use an Alt code if you have a Windows computer, but I'm not sure how well they work on this site.

    So 2000.17= two thousand.seventeen hundreds
2017.56= two thousand and seventeen.fifty-six hundreths
    ?

I am not asking,  how do I want to put it. Trying to see  rules in UK on properly write (words not numbers) a number? In the US,  we have very clear rules.

A break has been given since an observation you have given and it is mostly valid.  As far as illiteracy and bad grammar AND bad spelling (might as well throw that in the pile) are concerned, you hit the nail on the head.  But there is something far more atrocious than mere bad grammar, et. al., that is: Failure To Reason on Even the Most Basic Level.   I see that manifested daily everywhere I turn.   That inane mentality is what got us a Trump for President for starters.

I can handle the shabby grammar, altho I cringe when I see it.  I can't abide the misspelling when spell-check is almost universally available. What irritates me the most is the misuse of words - either  a homonym or just a totally inappropriate word.
