I believe there is more violence... Once people no longer believe in God they no longer fear the judgement of God and self control slowly fades over a few generations and then people simply explode in an unrestrained manor when they get angry.. The Road Rage phenomenon did not exists 60 years ago, people may have been angered with other peoples driving but they never took it to the next level of actual violence..

No, crime is down, both overall and violent crime, both in raw numbers, irrespective of population, and per capita.

We have news from across the country available 24/7/365 today.  We can get it on our cell phones, we can have our phones alert us when there is breaking news, and if that isn't fast enough, we can get it as it is happening via Twitter in many cases.  That's a far cry from the local and limited national news that used to be available at 6 and 11 PM.  And the media hypes it, the politicians hype it, and special interests hype it.

As we are more aware of things that are going on, and it is being constantly hyped to us, our perception has changed.  But as our awareness has increased, crime has actually decreased.

    • Total crimes are down to the lowest they've been since 1973, per capita since 1966.
    • Violent crime since 1978 (when there were 100+ million fewer people), per capita since 1970.
    • Property crime since 1973, per capita since 1966.
    • Murder since 1968, per capita since sometime prior to 1960.
    • Forcible rape since 1983, per capita since 1975.
    • Robbery since 1969, per capita since 1966.
    • Aggravated assault since 1985, per capita since 1975.
    • Burglary since 1967, per capita since 1962.
    • Larceny/Theft since 1974, per capita since 1968.
    • Vehicle theft since 1967, per capita since 1962.
    • Gun homicides are down to just under half the rate it was in 1993, while gun violence is less than one quarter in the same time period.
