Doesn't the Bible say not to bear false witness against thy neighbor? Then why do ardent Bible Thumpers ignore this commandment?

Huh?  Am I missing something here?

I'm not sure just what you are referring to, Sharonna.  I can only speak for myself, and I do try not to do that.  Truth matters.  JMHO

You don't fit this shoe, dear.  Not even close.  I don't see you as an ardent Bible Thumper.

I don't see you posting 20 paragraphs of sites to support your love of God.   I don't see you preaching the Bible and how it should be understood.  So, this doesn't even come near to fitting you.

Why yes, you are missing something here.  It's called the point.  Bearing false witness includes quite a number of things all of which you could have avoided had you been more familiar with the commandment.  By calling those that are religious "ardent Bible Thumpers", YOU have ignored this commandment and, therefore, have committed a sin by bearing false witness against thy neighbor. Oh no, can it be that you are again guilty of the same thing you've accused another of?  Yes, indeedy, I believe you are.

Since you are not well versed on just exactly what bearing false witness against thy neighbor entails, the following might enlighten you:

The Catholic Church interprets the commandment as a broad prohibition against misrepresenting the truth in one's relationship with others.  It not only enjoins truthfulness and respect for YOUR good name, but the good name of your neighbors as well, and even including the dead.  It prohibits detraction (true faults), calumny (false faults), gossip, rash judgment, lying, slander, unkind words, backbiting, aggravating what you believe has been done amiss and the violation of secrets.  It is prohibited that anyone speak evil of another even though he may be guilty.  It's said that slanderers are not content with knowing something, but proceed to assume jurisdiction and when they know a slight offense of another, they carry it into every corner, and are delighted and tickled that they can stir up another's displeasure.  It is also being able to distinguish between what should be expressed and what ought to be kept secret (or in other words, when you should keep your trap shut).  It’s called having discretion.  Your mother did know what she was talking about when she said if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything.   Respect for the reputation of others forbids every attitude and word likely to cause unjust injury.  One is guilty of rash judgment who assumes the moral fault of a neighbor without sufficient foundation. And last but certainly not least, boasting and bragging and disparaging someone by maliciously caricaturing (mocking) some aspect of their behavior is prohibited according to this commandment.  This commandment encompasses many different areas, but since it was you I had you in mind during the collection process, I limited my examples to include the more egregious sins.  But not to worry, if you get the lead out, you still might make it in time for confession.

I know what the Bible says is Right.  If I agree with what it says, then that is what I should teach.  If I am unable to obey, you seem to think that I should change what I teach.   But my obedience or disobedience has no effect on what is true!

The commandments are true no matter if I obey them or not.

We believe in Perfection.. that it is truth and good.. But we are human as so we often fail to live up to the perfection we admire and hold up as truth..
