Can extinct species be brought back by selectivley breeding animals, within related species, that have similar traits until enough combine

to mimic if not resurrect the dead species? Bring back the Wooly Mammoth by breeding hairy elephants with large tusks, for example, putting evolution on fast forward and by design.
