    He was mad at the guy who introduced Mercury as a processing agent in the manufacturing of felt hats during the 19th century.

  • He comes from the saying " Mad as a hatter".
    Like someone above stated Mercury was used in felt hat manufacturing and hatters typically went insane from Heavy metal poisoning.  It's even called Mad Hatter's Syndrome.
