Have you any lenience on your convenience?

  • A regular commuter struck up a friendship with the cleaner in a public toilet. One day he said, "You're always here. Don't you ever take a holiday." And the cleaner replied, "I don't think I get any." The commuter assured him that he was entitled and sent him off in search of his boss.

A couple of weeks later the commuter came in to find his friend, the cleaner, sitting in a deck chair wearing a straw boater and a Hawaiian shirt, with a can of beer in his hand. The cleaner thanked his friend profusely. "You were right," he said. "When I asked the boss about holidays he said to take them at my convenience."

Now I've put you through all that I can say that there's a little lenience in my convenience but it's not a patch on Sydney's Amex Building where I worked in the 1980s. I was on the 27th floor and our conveniences were on the north side of the building. There was a small porthole-type window above each urinal so that we could watch the boats on the harbour as we whiled away the time. We called it "the loo with a view".
