I played an ocarina when I was a kid, and I had a recorder for a long time but I lost it.
I always wanted to learn music, but there was never any such atmosphere. You can't learn much about music alone. It takes at least three people: one to make it, one to listen to it, and one to inspire development.
When I was in Atlanta I learned to play bagpipe, but by the time I was good enough to join the band I had noticed that even with a sizable Scottish community there didn't seem to be two people who liked each other, and darn few of them were sober.
