What is the national flower or animal of your state or country?

  • Of course, the United States of America uses the Bald Eagle as a symbol of our strength and freedom. It's definitely a majestic sight to see one soar. North Carolina in particular chose the Red Cardinal as our state bird. Very beautiful! We also have the Dogwood as our state flower which is also one of my personal favorites. The picture below shows both the Red Cardinal and the Dogwood flower. Jaimie would also love to know that North Carolina's state mammal is the Grey Squirrel.

  • Thanks Corey. Lovely pic. Yosey (from Ask) sends me photographs from her trips to California's national parks and a few of those have had bald eagles. She even mailed me a red-tailed hawk's feather.

  • The Red-Tailed Hawk is definitely my favorite bird, though the eagle holds a special place in my mind but that's more for national pride. What are the national symbols of Australia? Like the bird and flower?

  • Hi Livvie, thanks for those. Glad you got a coyote in there (what state is that?). I've been waiting most of my life for him to catch that pesky road runner.

The coyote actually did catch the roadrunner on Bugs Bunny's Bustin' Out All Over.

  • Clever! Somebody else showed me that a week or so back. You had to admire his optimism putting on the bib and getting ready for the meal. :)

  • The others have covered the nation's bird and flower. I live in North Dakota. Our state bird is the Western Meadowlark.

I don't know what our flower is so our state tree is the American Elm.

  • Such a shame about the grizzly. So many species have been lost.
I found a quail in our garden last week. Never seen one in the area before. I've been keeping an eye out for him in case he comes back but haven't seen him since.

  • It was a subspecies, but you're right ... it is a shame.

  • Thanks, Lucia. My father came from Wales so I know about leeks and my maternal great-grandfather came from England. Most of my generation came from somewhere in the UK.

Yes, Lady slippers are a type of orchid. The loon picture is with summer plumage. It looks rather drab in winter.
