Cremation or burial?

Which is the most practical? Which do you prefer? Or would you prefer a Viking send-off, set adrift in a blazing longboat?

Just chuck me out in the woods and let nature do its thing. I'd like to atleast feed some critters and bugs with my corpse and maybe fertilize the ground for the plants.

  • I like it, Patchouli. I wouldn't mind a hole in the back yard. :)

  • There is actually a place where they do just that, I think it's in Tennessee somewhere.  They study the stages of decomposition or something like that.

Cremation.  Land should be for the living, not the dead.  My niece will have my ashes placed in a bio-urn which will fertilize a tree.

  • Mine will go somewhere similar. There's a lovely bushland area just a couple of kilometres from home. I've spent a lot of time there over the past 50-odd years.

  • Didge, why do you and I have green dots by our forehead, but Harry and SpunkySenior do not?
YogaFan does not seem to have one either...have they figured out that you and I require special watching? This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at February 18, 2017 9:54 AM MST

  • I have no idea. I assumed that everybody had them until you pointed out that they have not. (I'm not very observant.) It'd be interesting to find out.

The green dot shows who is on line at the moment.

  • Virginia, those green dots indicate that we are on line. People without the green dots are members but not on line.

Cremation.  I've always felt cemeteries are waste of good real estate.

And cemeteries sure help a funeral home make some big bucks.

  • Dear Didge,

When I was studying Buddhism, I learned about an Eastern culture that would just fling someone's remains off into the wilderness, so the animals could get the nutrition...and I really kinda like that idea.

So my plan is, that I will know when the *sigh* end is drawing nigh, and go up into the woods and just expire there...leaving my body to benefit the wildlife...

Cool idea, don't you agree? This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at February 18, 2017 3:57 PM MST

I'm sorry my mind works like this but, what if you get attacked by animals before you expire?  That wouldn't be a very pleasant way to go. :-(

P.S. What religion does that?  Sounds like a common sense solution.

I guess I should edit my post but I'm too lazy so I will post it here.  Virginia mentioned an Eastern culture that would fling someone's remains....  I'm wondering which culture (sorry, not religion) that does that.  I think it's a pretty great way to handle (& respect) the circle of life. :)

You didn't interrupt at all!  I always like hearing from you.  I should have said thank you for your info too Alf.

    So,
    THANK YOU!

And always know that you are welcome to add any information you feel is important to add.

  • Hi Harry,
It may have been somewhere in the Himalayas...
And now you have given me something else to worry about!

In 1998 I camped for several weeks in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, the Tohono O'odham Reservation, and a panther had come up from Mexico. You could hear it calling in the night...I seem to be too dumb for even the animals to bother me...I was just delighted for it to be there, we were by Baboquivari Mountain, the sacred mountain there. Yes, I realized I mistakenly said religion and being the lazy bum I am, I made the correction in my response to Alf.  lol.

Well it sounds to me like the Himalayan Buddhists have the right idea.  You appear to be a well traveled & interesting lady.  I hope we see more posts from you mixing in more of your adventures!

I had always assumed I would be cremated, but as I am learning more about green burials, I will choose whatever method is best for the environment.
