Are these the words of an intelligent person? How many points would be given for good vocabulary and speech likely to inspire?

“We’re going to do things having to do with other countries because we’re treated very, very unfairly,”
 “In terms of achievement, I think I’d give myself an A,” he told Fox News. “Because I think I’ve done great things, but I don’t think I have — I and my people, I don’t think we’ve explained it well enough to the American public.”
“In terms of messaging, I would give myself a C or a C-plus … My messaging isn’t good.” In particular, a plan to deport undocumented immigrants who commit serious crimes had not been explained effectively. “And maybe that’s my fault,” he said.

All fine examples of a great orator? Makes Bush look like a genius? 

They say intelligence is revealed in the language we use, more intelligent people use complex language..  how does that relate to Trump?

    I cannot deny I get very distracted with his poor skills as an orator.  He comes off brash and uneducated, although I am pretty certain he is an intelligent man.  

    Being able to convey your words properly can not be underrated, especially when the world is watching everything you do.

  • "I am pretty certain he is an intelligent man."  - you are?? Hmm I cannot but help wonder why as in reality we have seen that he rarely reads even reports if they are more than very short. He doesn't use a teleprompter, (suggestions are it's because he cannot read well) and his spoken language is cringe-worthy. 

    People do say that he *must* be intelligent to have succeeded in business, not so.  We have to remember he was given a fair chunk of money from his father to start a business and even so he has filed for bankruptcy at least 4 times so far.. he has many lawsuits against him for business deals.. and his daddy bailed him out at least once.... so hardly sounds like a super efficient business man to me.. In fact one might be forgiven for saying he has made some very poor business decisions and ruined a fair few businesses in the process.. leaving poorer people to suffer.. 

    The sheer mismatch between what he thinks and reality suggests either a mental health issue or a lack of intelligence to be able to see what's really going on.

    You are way too generous peapod in crediting him with intelligence.

    Oh, I think it takes intelligence to manipulate people to get what you want and even with all his money, he had to do that much.

    I do see where you are coming from.  Parts of him seem outright stunted.  

    I thought he could even be an alcoholic until I heard he doesn't drink.  Something isn't right with the man's mind.

    He has the vocabulary of a ten year old and an emotional quotient the same.  I don't undestand why he doesn't have someone write a speech for him and then just read the damned thing.  God forbid there is a WWIII, can you see him sitting down with the leaders of other countries, ala FDR, and hammering out a peace?

    Thank goodness!  I trip over my words a lot when speaking, especially in public.

  • Opposite for me.   I was always bad at writing assignments and write in a list of points.  I was especially bad when there was a minimum word requirement. In my mind it was silly and saw it as asking for fluff.

  • I remember teachers saying to put more passion or feeling into it and just thinking " What are you talking about?   I have no passion  or feeling about this subject.

    It's funny how teachers and even parents will try and make one child be like another.  A wise adult looks for what a child is naturally good at and works with that.

  • That is why I cringed when I got pushed into honors English class.   I knew it was gonna be more of that.  Math, science, and social studies honors I was fine with but I kicked and screamed over the English honors class.  Wanted no part of it.

    Well, let's just say that the words sharp, quick, or intelligent never come to mind when I think about Trump.

    As for intelligent people using more complex language?---I'd say they are more likely to do so, but if the point is communication of ideas, you must use rhetoric that people understand.  (So I use different vocabularies for kids and rocket scientists.)

    And one can never be sure if Trump actually meant what he said until press secretary Sean Spicer has had a chance to clarify what Trump meant when he spoke.

    Personally, I cringe whenever I listen to him talk----he, as you suggest, is no orator; nor is he a good speaker.  But what bothers me most is that he is not well educated.  (Oh, no, I just realized he may talk to us in that way because he thinks we are not well educated either.)

    And "Language gives us the ability to communicate our intelligence to others by talking, reading, and writing."

    I would certainly think statement is true; and that it is a safe bet that if someone is judged intelligent on that basis, it's probably a correct judgment.
