Must have been disconcerting for him with the big crowd watching. But look at that poor old bull. He's got three spikes hanging out of his side. Glad he got one of his own in.
Banderillas (spikes) are thrust into the shoulder and/or neck of the bull to get him to charge in a straight line. When the bull first enters the arena, they watch him to see if he favors one side or the other, in regards to charging, and then the banderillas are placed to get him to charge in a straight line. The Picador also uses a lance to assist in this technique.
