Ever hear of the term "cognitive closure"? It's the need for a plan of action that allows a person to put an adverse event behind them.

The need for cognitive closure is prompted by events that spark anxiety and fear - like President Trump's election did for some folks. University of Maryland sociologist Arie Kruglanski says that many liberals are demonizing Trump supporters at the moment because of a need for this kind of closure. Sounds a lot like what's happening right here on AM, doesn't it?

  • It does indeed, Stu. Not in every case, but certainly some stand out.
    Back in the day, before PC became so pervasive, it was sometimes called sour grapes. One hopes these folks can come to terms with their bitterness in some positive way.
