How many famous, successful Irish people can you name?

Ireland has produced high achievers in many fields. There was Nobel laureate, Ernest Walton, who split the atom in 1931; Shaw and Yeats, both literary giants; artists like Jack Yeats (see pic). Who would you like to honour by listing them here?

    James Joyce

  • Both great writers. I may have mentioned him on another site, but have you ever read any of George Russell's poetry (written under the name of A.E.). It's very mystical and, to borrow Huxley's term, has the ability to transport you.

  • Yes...A.E., he is one of those you and I have shared a few times now, but never enough for me....

You, my dear friend, told on yourself when you showed me those stunning verses he wrote...you are quite mystical, in your own way.

  • I've had a few experiences, Virginia. I'm more of a thinker than a feeler and the two are often in conflict.

  • Come on people... Mr Guiness ... sheesh!
Man...or woman... does not live on literature alone... and those that are gifted enough to write such tomes certainly don't... without mental lubrication where would be i ask!

  • Glis, and Ozgirl, I was reading online about Irish slang...and Guinness is "the black."
As in I will take a drink of The Black (or something like that...)

  • Arthur Guinness was a benefactor to the entire human race. He deserves his place in history. Sláinte mhaith to him and all his friends.

Well, since 3/4 of America is at least PART Irish, I would hazard a guess as to a LOT.

  • True enough. From a small island, the Irish have made an impact in a lot of places.

  • No one has mentioned the Three Irish Tenors yet. I had the pleasure of seeing them in concert last year when they came to Nashville for the very first time. :)

  • Thank you so much. I hadn't heard of them and thoroughly enjoyed that. I'll go on a tenor hunt later and download some of their music.

  • They are fantastic. Here's a pic of my friend, Marshall, with Ronan, we ran into him in the lobby after the concert. I was laughing because Marshall was fan girling all over him :)

  • It was. I really had a good time listening to them, their voices are beautiful. Didn't realize I knew so many Irish songs either.  I think my favorite that evening was Tura Lura Lura.
