I got through differential calculus.  I was able to do it because it was fun. I still can't cut a straight line with a power saw...so I gave up trying. It depends on what one strives for.

Hi RosieG~ It really depends on my interest in the subject.  If the outcome of gaining the knowledge is worth the struggle, I will without hesitation.  If it is petty, it is highly doubtful I will put out the effort.
If I am interested in the subject and it is still a struggle, I am sure I would do it.  I'm not much of a quitter unless I see it is realistically out of my reach.  Then I chalk it up as a dream that someday I might be able to grasp.

I tend to move on Merlin. I do remember in high school taking shorthand and having difficulty "getting it". Then one day magically everything made sense! Of course I had no choice because it was in school and in those days grades were important to me.  I am a very impatient person. I am also not very coordinated so things of an athletic nature I would not pursue. And then there are just some things that are above and beyond my ability to comprehend at all much less master!  Thank you for your thoughtful answer and Happy Tuesday to you! :)

Good Morning RosieG and a Happy Tuesday to you as well. :) It's kind of foggy in my neck of the wood but I am sure it will burn off.  Now, here is a subject I like.  The Weather.  Anything that has to do with the Earth fascinates me.  They didn't offer a class in meteorology back in high school.  Basic biology which normally entailed dissecting frogs and an insect collection pretty much covered it.
Grades were very important to me, too. Some classes were harder than others.  My sister was a 4 point student all through jr. high and high school.  We went to the same schools but not at the same time because of our age difference.  She was a very hard act to follow. A few of the teachers would say, "Oh, you'll breeze right through my class.  Your sister did."  That had a tendency to kill my spirit.  It was not always the case.
Another thing we have in common is shorthand difficulties.  I just "couldn't get it" either!  I slid by with a B- and that was really stretching it.  My all-time WORST enemy was algebra.  I swear (well not often) BUT, when I do, algebra is probably somewhere in the sentence!  The idea of using letters to solve a numeric problem is NUTS!  A prime example of me, "going the distance," to learn just enough to pull the grade.  To this day, I still don't grasp the concept.  Numbers are for math and letters are for spelling words.  Please don't mix them together.  It baffles me!
Over the years I have found that I excel in many things my sister doesn't and have learned that I don't have to be an honor roll or A student in everything.  There is much more to life than "making the grade."
Your talent in writing and expressing yourself RosieG is wonderful.  To me, you are very athletic in your mind and that is a gift many do not have.  I'm off to pay bills and balance the check book.  Ugh! Math ... but at least it isn't algebra!  Big smiles!  Take Care! :) :) This post was edited by Merlin at April 5, 2017 10:30 AM MDT

  • Once I decide to learn something , I may be a little compulsive about it. I do feel like quitting many times, and the times I have, I ended up  feeling like a loser, so I really try to stick with  it now.
