A home made vacuum tube tester (like the tubes they had in old TV;s) it was the worst gift ever because it looked like it was made by a 2 year old monkey plus if you touched some of the wires you got a shock. I didn't even have a TV that had tubes (they stopped making them in the 50's) but the guy that made it for me had that Altimeters and I guess he figured if I had a tube tester I could always fix my tV and watch I Love Lucy. I still have it I don't dare plug it in but I keep it on a shelf in my front room so that I can always remember Ted (he passed on and went to the happy electronics shop in the sky). Any way it;s the thought that counts. Cheers and happy weekend!

Probably some sort of perfume my mother thought I would like.  Our tastes were so different.  Luckily, I knew she didn't spend much.  LOL

I don't remember all the details, but I remember once Christmas friends/family asked me what I wanted, so I distributed a list. Of course, people being people, they didn't want to get me what was on my list, they wanted to be "clever" and use the list as a basis for their own ideas.

The problem with that approach is their cleverness ended up in awkward nonsensical or duplicative gifts. The one I remember is particular is I wanted the book Talking Back to Prozac, because I had already read Listening to Prozac. Someone in my family looked at my list, thought "Aha! I'll out-clever his request"...and bought me a copy of Listening to Prozac.

After that experience, I quit asking for specific birthday/Christmas gifts. I decided that whatever people deemed to give me was just fine, it was the thought that counted. Since then, I've been much happier with whatever I have received.

Old.  I give great gifts.   You should have asked me.  I would have sent you a prescription for Prozac.   And the right book.

(NO.  I wouldn't really do that. I have to make sure you know this.   I don't experiment on the living like that.)

Oh that would be my bosses at Leo Burnett, U.S.A.   They gave me cheap champagne after I had told them I was highly allergic to booze. They just forgot about it.   I didn't matter. \

LOL  the second worst was when I worked for a sales room where the bosses cleaned out their drawers and gave us cheap junk they wanted to throw out.  I got a used candle.  They were serious too.

One time at a company Christmas party I attended (held at a nearby hotel convention room), they had a gift raffle. Several of (the majority of?) the prizes were potted poinsettias which were the table centerpieces. I wonder which executive had that brilliant idea....;-D....

I think you are an extremely kind person Nanoose. Seriously. To keep something you could never use to remind you of someone you clearly cared about. Very nice story m'dear. Thank you for sharing it with us and Happy Saturday! :)

Hah! It's the thought that counts. Right PeaPod? When I was younger I used to wear colognes. Perfume was always too "heavy" for me But at some I became allergic to scents. Maybe allergic isn't the right word. They made me nauseated. So I stopped wearing them. Even now if someone who is wearing a lot of scent hugs me the "fragrance" lasts a long time. Not my cuppa tea. Thank you for your reply and Happy Saturday to thee! :) I guess your mom gifted you with what smelled good to her.

I'm not sure I follow Baba. The person who gave you the worst gift was the person you loved the most? Apologies but I'm unsure about what you mean. Thank you for your reply and Happy Saturday! :)

Bummer! Your brothers didn't believe in taking turns or playing fair?  Double Bummer!  You lived near a lake when you were younger? So it wasn't really the gift itself that was the worst so much as your limited access to it. Thank you for your reply Adam and Happy Saturday! :)

I wonder why people ask for a list of what you want and then ignore it or cleverly do a riff on it or extrapolate? You know they mean well.  They just didn't execute very well. Mahalo for your reply OS. I'm a big fan of gift cards or cash. As you know. That way the person can PURCHASE what he/she wants and that's really the point of a gift, isn't it? To give people what they want? Happy Saturday! :)

I would have been very hurt by that
gift" of booze. Not only was it very thoughtless but potentially harmful and uncaring. About cleaning out their desks and giving you the "droppings". I think that is funny as he ** . I do. I can't even almost imagine being on the receiving end of trash. How much of the candle was used?  Was it the really big, thick, fragrant, expensive kind or a cheap, slender, white, fragrance-free standard-issue candle?  Thank you for your reply  Sharonna and Happy Saturday! :)

    682

Dresses, tops, jeans that all fit so wrongly. Cheap undersized tees.

I'd be better off if they just gave me a voucher so I can pick something that fits.
