By all rights are we not at war with Syria?

Or better put shouldn't we expect Syria to be at war with us?

  • I think we're closer to proxy war with Russia.

We have committed an unprovoked act of aggression on a sovereign nation, but realistically, Syria isn't in a position to retaliate.  Nevan has a point, however, given that Russia is Syria's ally, and has actually been invited by Assad to assist Syria in their civil war. • The whole world is at war with each other one way or another.    We just don't talk about it in certain terms any more.

We committed an undeclared act of war against Syria. They have not committed aggression against the U.S., prior to this, they had not threatened us, they hadn't even threatened out "strategic interests" (if you go for that sort of thing) abroad.

We started a war with a sovereign nation that posed no threat, we've retaliated against other nations for far less than what this admin did in Syria. How would our govt. react if another nation bombed one of our air bases? Yeah, I'd say they consider this a war.

I'm sure most of the foreign nationals of the world only suspected that Trump was a duplicitous liar prior to this, now they know it with certainty.

Well, unlike him, the Obama admin went to congress more than once for authorization. Dems left no illusions about their intentions. At least they were straight up about it. They didn't lie to potential constituents for years only to knife them in the back. Furthermore, reps are truly working at hypocrisy by criticizing the Obama admin for inaction.

One good* thing that may come of this, he may indeed be a one term potus.

  • That's because liberalism doesn't really exist in any real context any more.
These people aren't really liberals in the traditional sense.

  • Well said! Liberalism has been hijacked by moderate conservative hawks...

I prefer the word progressive...Liberalism is dead

  • IDK,   I don't see many progressive thinkers embracing liberalism either.   Liberalism is for the most part a centrist but libertarian philosophy,    but everything is dictated by extremist authoritarians these days whether it's left  or right.   Outcomes are pretty much the same with differences in the reasons for the same conclusions.

  • Ughhhhhhhh! THe Guardian! My Gawd.  The title makes it seems like all liberals are congratulating trump, but when you read further into the article, you'll see, "Good on Trump, some liberal pundits say"....SOME

This leftist isn't thrilled or cheering. I see it for what it was. A cheap diversion, nothing more. Nothing less.

The Warhawks are willing to overlook what is really going on as long as they can get us into another war.

Ha ha, don't get your panties in a bunch, Jak.  I know that not all libs are applauding Trump.  The number who are is interesting, though.  That Trump was held in disdain by western leaders and prominent Dems and they supported his actions, even with qualification, is hypocritical.  For months I have heard whining, crying and gnashing of teeth over the possibility of Trump embroiling us in war.  War hawks don't only sport the Republican label, though.

The labels people go by seem to have less and less to do with the definitions of those words than ever.  Just look at the number of self-proclaimed "libertarians" who voted for Trump, and who supported the likes of Cruz, Carson, Rubio, Bush, and others in the Republican primaries, as an example.  The false left-right paradigm in Washington has increasingly become a few on the far left, a few on the far right, and a whole bunch of them arguing the minutiae of waging war abroad while restricting rights domestically.

I guess I just get sick of people hiding behind labels that no longer have any real meaning in a practical sense.  Bush waged unconstitutional wars and had broad support both in Congress and from the general public.  Obama continued and furthered our involvement overseas as well as the erosion of our rights, and had broad support as well.  Sure, there were the diehard Rs and Ds that paid lip service to opposing them, and things each side genuinely disagreed with both over...but when it came to our military flexing its might overseas, most jump on board.  And if we need to give up privacy and rights for a false sense of security...so be it.

Sorry for the rant, but it truly sickens me.

  • Come on buddy dial it back here.   We all know that and that's kind what it's about here.    The "liberal"   Hillary apologist types who look at this and go "well Trump got it right this time and was justified" .  The ones who talk about Trump meaning WW3 and in his first act of possibly making that possibility are kinda excusing it.    The very vocal hypocrites.

I don't see people who support Clinton as Liberals.

She is the primary reason we have that skunk in office.
3 Years ago I predicted this would happen. Seriously...It was on that site we dare not mention.  I got into a huge rowe with some people. Man I wish the comments and stuff on it were still available to view This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at April 10, 2017 1:12 PM MDT

Q108. "Who has the power to declare war?"

    A. There is a short answer and a much longer answer. The short answer is that the Constitution clearly grants the Congress the power to declare war, in Article 1, Section 8. This power is not shared with anyone, including the President.

The President, however, is just as clearly made the Commander in Chief of all of the armed forces, in Article 2, Section 2. In this role, the President has the ability to defend the nation or to take military action without involving the Congress directly, and the President's role as "C-in-C" is often part of the reason for that.

  • This military action wasn't defence,.  It was an offensive act of war.  It wasn't in response to any threat to the US or our interests either.   FAIL!

Did you miss the fact that Syria hasn't declared war on us and we have not declared war on them either.

What's your point in your response?
