For years I've read about how important The Great Barrier Reef is to the surrounding ecology. Now it's in big trouble. What happens next?

Bleaching is crippling it. So far 2/3 of the reef has been damaged due to warming water temperatures, cyclones, overfishing and pollution. It has sustained 4 SEVERE bleachings which occurred in 1998, 2002, 2016, 2017. Is there any way to stop it or slow it down? How important has it really been scientifically?
