I didn't drive unless the trains weren't running (happened twice in two years - once due to a derailment, the other due to a drivers' strike). Sydney is like that, if you want a rent that a young couple can afford (the extreme outer fringe suburbs), but still wotk in the city, it's a long commute. I lived in Lawson, worked in North Sydney - two hours on the train to Sydney, then another half hour across the Harbour Bridge and up the line a bit. Adelaide is a smaller city and less expensive. Traffic is also less of a nightmare, so I do drive more often now - 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. 20 minutes if it's early on a weekend morning, there's almost nothing on the road then.
26 miles or 45 minutes is my limit. I've been doing that almost every day the last 6 years. Sirius XM helps pass the time.
