The cleric, Fethullah Gulen, says he had nothing to do with it. But President of Turkey, Erdogan insists Gulen be returned to Turkey. One thing: can Erdogan prove it?
Sure, that's going to happen.
Wouldn't the U.S. be required to do that as Turkey is a NATO ally?
No, the US should let Turkish Miltary Special Forces fly into Pennsylvania, invade Gulen's home, shoot him, and dump his body at sea.
After all, we (the US) claimed the right to violate the sovereign territory of Pakistan to do that to Osama bin Laden. If extrajudical murder/assassination is OK for us, why isn't it OK for Turkey?
The last thing I would want to see is a foreign government given permission to enter this country's air space, even if it is to take out an exile.
He needs to prove it. PROVE IT ERDO.
I don't know the rest of the story. I know that we never get our perps back when they flee somewhere, so we should keep him just to be snotty.
@SpunkySenior -- So why is it OK for the United States to routinely violate the air space of other sovereign nation-states?
I don't believe I said it was OK for us to do that - it isn't, whether it's a NATO ally or anyone else. One of the reasons we're in the spot we're in today is because of all the times we inserted ourselves in countries and governments that we had no business doing.
@SS -- Thank you. I applaud the consistency of your viewpoint.
Far too many Americans are utterly hypocritical when it comes permissible acts by the US government/military versus permissible acts by other nation-states.
Note: I was not seriously suggesting the US should allow the Turkish military to violate American territorial sovereignty. But the US government does NOT have principled stand (other than we are powerful enough to prevent it) as to why it shouldn't happen.
I couldn't agree more. From the time we overthrew whatever government was in Iran to put the Shah n power, we've been sticking our nose where it doesn't belong and we can't understand why countries don't like us. Imagine that?
Gulen is the bogeyman Erdogan blames everything on. It's rather childish and blatantly simplistic - no doubt to appeal to a broad swathe of folk at home.
Rational assessment of Erdogan's many claims of 'parallel' activities leaves one with the unavoidable impression that he's a liar and is attempting to create McCarthyist propaganda for his own purposes.
