What kinds of tests do you have to take/pass in order to get a permit/license to own a gun? Do you need lessons? Is there a written test?

Do you have to take a physical test where you shoot at targets? How proficient at using a gun properly must you be to own a gun legally?

  • In New Hampshire...you simply provide proof you are not a felon.

After that, all you need to do is prove that your have the cash.
Hand it over, get your gun, stick it in your back pocket or your kids back-pack, and go along with your business :)

So you don't even have to know how to "operate" one? No testing of any kind? Oy vey! Very scary! Thank you for your reply JG. I'm gonna ask this question but I'm asking you first. Should gun laws  vary from state to state or should there be one Federal guideline covering all of them? :)

  • Nope...Don't be a felon, cash & carry.
You can just put that thing in your purse or pocket.  No license or permit required.  NH is a very odd state

I think that there should a federal background check for consistency.

I think so too but I'm not a gun person so what I say doesn't count. Thank you for your reply Sbf! :)

New Hampshire abides by federal law requiring background checks from licensed dealers.  Private sales are excluded.

  • Which is the bare minimum.
NH is an interesting state. It's not really conservative or republican. It's more Libertarian, but the real "Old Skool" libertarianism. Not the bastardized, fake-right-wing version that so many now find it chic to identify with

Despite their self-identification as such, that is not libertarianism.  I find it funny that the very people doing that used to spit the word out as if it left a bad taste in their mouth, who only began co-opting it when it became clear that Trump would be the nominee, did so because he wasn't yet truly considered a Republican...and now they are largely back to calling themselves Republican.  Give it another week or so and they'll be spitting again.

The requirements would vary from state to state. In my state, you just have to pass the background check if buying from a dealer. But no permit is required unless.you want to conceal/carry then there is a class that is both book work and a shooting test for accuracy.
In IL, they have a Firearms Owner Identification card (FOID) to have possession of either a Firearm and/or Ammo.

Thank you for the detailed  info in response to my question m2c. It's very helpful and I appreciate it. So it's a state-by-state thing then and not Federal Law covering all?  I wonder how smart that is. :)

In Australia, it's fiendishly difficult and subject to all sorts of regulations. Maybe that's why we haven't had a mass shooting in twenty years. In America I understand all you need is sufficient cash, which is why you have one every twenty minutes.

So NO testing is required of any sort at all  Sbf? None? That shocks me. You need to take a written test every 5 years in America to renew your driver'ls license. The first test you take also includes a driving test to see if  you can handle the car, make the correct signals, etcetera. To my knowledge you never have to take another test driving a car but I don't know what happens if you lose your license because of drunk driving or whatever.  A car can kill and does. We KNOW that is the ONLY purpose of guns. What other need is there for bullets than to kill a living thing? So if one can just buy any old gun without any screening or controls no wonder America is so screwed up gunwise. Thank you for your reply! :)
