  • I can't speak for other states but in Texas it doesn't.  We bought a house beside a creek and had to buy extra flood insurance but the government offered a low price policy so it wasn't too bad.

  • Thank you. I've never needed to make use of my home owners insurance untill this month. I'm shocked that flooding isn't covered. I had no idea ...so I'm highly annoyed.

(USA)...Standard homeowners and renters insurance does not cover flood damage. Flood coverage, however, is available in the form of a separate policy both from the National Flood Insurance Program - NFIP (888-379-9531) and from a few private insurers. ... Flood insurance is available for renters as well as homeowners. This post was edited by Beans/SilentGeneration at May 12, 2017 6:58 AM MDT

  • Okay , thank you. That's what the person I was dealing with told me. I so annoyed cos I bought my first home in my early 20's .. Have always had home insurance but never made a claim. This what I get for not reading fine print. I don't like insurance companies right now ... Meh :/

Maybe in some states.  In Florida we must buy flood insurance from the government if we want to be protected from costs associated with rising water due to hurricanes.  It is not covered by homeowners.  Homeowners does cover flood from plumbing issues and, I believe, up to $10K for other/any types of water damage. No it doesn't.

In USA you have to buy a National Flood insurance Program policy, which I have for my house, through a private agent.  I'm in Zone C which I think means low risk for flooding but anything's possible so better have it anyway.

  • I found out yesterday that only 13 of the over 200 insurance company in Canada even offer flood insurance  coverage. Sneaky fookers :)

There are a whole lot of people in USA who find out the hard way that homeowner's insurance doesn't cover floods.  Fortunately it was one of those things dad told me about when I bought my house from him.

I think here you can only buy a National Flood Insurance Program policy.  I couldn't find any insurance companies that even offer flood insurance in my state when I looked on the internet.

  • I see, thanks. I know allot of people across Ontario and Quebec are finding out the hard way that flooding isn't covered under insurance. I was pretty pissed off when I posted this question....I'm over it now . I still think it's ridiculous though and I don't see what the point is of even having home insurance. If I fell asleep with the oven on like an IDIOT and burnt my home down, covered. Something happens out of my control, not covered. Makes sense :/ Nope :)

    Hi, Jamie

    Sorry about your predicament.

Here's a short read on flood insurance and why it's not covered under homeowner's policies in the US.  (Bottom line: insurers have to spread the risk in order to remain in business.)
