Duke University has been working on creating an "invisibility cloak" for years. What other "magical" things might be based on science?

Flying carpet. Magic wand. Could they ever have really existed? How do we know that our current technology is more advanced than that of yesterday's? Maybe the fantasy "myths" that have been passed down through the centuries were based on the reality of that time and place. Maybe?

Divining, spying on faraway events by magical means as they are occurring. I read a lot of fantasy.
