You do something you KNOW is wrong so you try to cover it up. Then the coverup is discovered so you try to cover THAT up. Why?

Coverups are always uncovered sooner or later. The more layers of coverup there are the worse it gets. Why don't people ADMIT the truth immediately when caught and then move on? Why does denial denial denial denial appeal to some? Why dig the hole so deep you will never get out?
