At some point Trump said he wanted people coming to America to LOVE OUR COUNTRY/adopt our customs. Do ex-pat Americans abroad assimilate?

Homogenized. Once here Americans want to envelope all cultures and expect them to speak the language, dress as we do and think as we do. Otherwise they cannot LOVE OUR COUNTRY. Or so they  say.  Is that what YOU think? Would you want YOUR culture to be swallowed, digested and disappear completely? Why?

I think some do and some don't.  My husband's uncle was an expat.  He moved to Germany and he worked very hard to learn to speak the language without an accent and fit in with German culture.  If I were going to move to another country I would try to do the same.

However, I read on some expat forums that some Americans who live abroad collect together in little groups and never fit in with their new country.

I read that too Livvie. I guess it depends on what you want out of the move. I'd try to adapt as well. After all it's my new home. One I chose not one that was chosen for me by my parents.  Why would I want to maintain the exact same lifestyle I had in America? Thank you for your reply and Happy Tuesday! :)

  • Here is what people, especially Liberals, don't understand. Assimilation has nothing to do with leaving behind one's culture or it disappearing altogether. Assimilation means that everyone who comes to live in the United States of America must follow our laws, abide by our rules and values. I will use Islam and Sharia law as an example. American laws and values state that everyone is free to worship as they please. Islam states to kill the infidels, those who aren't Muslim. American values state that women have equal rights and opportunities as a man. Sharia law states that women are inferior to men, they can't drive, can't get an education, can't own businesses, have to have 4 male eyewitnesses to prove rape. American values state that everyone, straight, gay, white, black, male, female - everyone - has equal worth and equal rights. Islam, as said before, disregards women, kills gays/lesbians/Christians/Jews/Americans/etc. If someone from an Islamic country under Sharia Law comes to live in America, they cannot be allowed to abide by Sharia law because it is the exact opposite to American values. Anyone coming to America must be able to contribute to our society in a positive manner. Anyone who comes here is still able to follow their religion or enjoy their own culture as long as it doesn't conflict with our laws. That's just the way it is.

Assimilation doesn't mean that we cannot celebrate other cultures or enjoy our cultures. We are huge on other cultures. We have entire museums, theme parks, etc dedicated to other cultures. Assimilation doesn't mean giving up one's culture, it means abiding by American laws and values.

Here's what YOU don't understand  Corey. Attacking Liberals whenever you can even when it is irrelevant/immaterial/non-responsive is not very smart. In my opinion. You can't help yourself though can you? More's the pity.

  • I wasn't attacking just Liberals. I said people don't understand, especially Liberals. Assimilation is the law of every nation. You just don't let in people that wish to harm your nation. It's mainly Liberals that make a big deal out of it and even pull the race card when they are losing the argument. Actually they pull the race card for everything but that's not the point .It's not just Liberals but they are the one's making a big deal out of it. Since they are the ones making a big deal out if this issue it is very relevant to mention them.
