What's your favorite most depressing Christmas song?

Mine is, hands down, the great Dwight Yoakam's "Come On Christmas"

~ there's no other song like it at all! I love this song! And Dwight!

Such an upbeat sound for the tragedy.

This song has been done by so many people - - do you know if this is the original? I like this Charles' version by far the best of all I've heard!
    :)
And dig that simple, cool piano part - -just chord-after-chord - - excellent.
Even if it's not time for Christmas, thanks for answering, Jaimie!

    Christmas Shoes - New Song

So sad!! Makes me tear up every time I hear even the first few notes.

Yes, the subject matter of that song is indeed sad.

Yet, somehow (and I have people in my life affected by cancer) I find the song very annoying and over-the-top/maudlin. Too sappy, somehow. That's just me, though. I can be sort of weird when it comes to my music choices.

    Thanks for answering, mk1217!!

I can definitely see that! I think it's very obviously intended to make someone emotional, and that in and of itself can be irritating sometimes. But man, IT GETS ME EVERY TIME.

I can relate to that in other cases, too, mk1217! You're right! Sometimes I seem to have no choice when I get emotional -- if it happens, it happens!

  • this entirely insipid "Twelve Days".  Long, repetitive, boring.

I see where you're coming from, whistle6 -- it is long and repetitive! I have heard some parody versions that I enjoy - - like The Muppets version and then some other version with a male voice (one among many singers) getting increasingly more irritated each verse as he has trouble with the Christmas lights.

    Thanks for answering!

I love that "irritated" version, haha! Reminds me of my father. So sweet.

mk1217 -- so you are familiar with that 'irritated-with-the-lights' guy version? Cool! Ha! I think the title is something like The 12 Things I Hate Most About Christmas.

  • Did you know 12 Days is a catechumen song?

And yea the irritation with the lights is funny, still long nd annoying though.

Yeah, I did know that, I believe. I tend to forget about that aspect to the song because I, like you, still just find it a repetitive and long song!
    :)

The song can be annoying, no matter what. You're right, whistle6!

I've never heard this song. It's nice! And the more and more I hear Merle Haggard songs, I realize more and more what a pleasant singing voice he has! I admit that I never had paid much attention to his singing before.
