Discussion»Questions»Legal» I heard this morning someone is proposing a law to ban anyone under 13 years old from having a smart phone. Would you agree to that law?
Personally, I don't think such a ban would be enforceable, even if it became law. I would like to see parents do that anyway. If the parents are concerned about a child being able to reach them in case of emergency, a simply cell phone with a text feature will work.
Yes, I think if parents don't want their children on smart phones then it should be their responsibility to enforce that within their household. It doesn't seem reasonable or even possible on a grand scale.
I don't know how I feel about this. I'm not sure there's enough information. "Having a smartphone" - does that mean being able to purchase one? Or simply having one in possession? There's a big difference. I honestly think it's silly to assume that a law saying anyone younger than 13 can simply just not use a smart phone. While I don't love the idea of young children being engrossed in screens, sometimes access to technology can be a great and necessary thing. If the law referred to purchasing a smartphone...then my only thought is where are these 13-year-olds that can afford them and even if they can, can you get on a phone plan at that age?
