I don't know what country you're in, Wild Cat, but of UK discount stores, 99p stores were bought out by Poundland, and now we have two Poundlands, and no 99p store, which I'm not pleased about. 99p stores had a better range of food items, which used to be the majority of what I bought in there. I also like Wilko for the none-food items.
Harry, FYI, we have a bunch of the Dollar Store kind of store here in the USA. But...inevitably they always manage to find a way to insert items that are slightly more, and then capitalize on that idea. Pretty soon the dollar store is the $3 dollar store and more.
Sigh. We still have a 99cent only store here and there, but very soon...I know... that will turn into 1.99 store too.

I was going to say the Tilde Emphorium, but their merchandise is really high-end and their prices are through the roof. I like it anyway because of the variety. ~
Is that the store right next door to the Hammer of Grammar store where the promise to punch-your-ache right out of you back? I'm not so sure I trust those guys.
That goes to show I guess, that it depends on where you go. I find some good stuff in the Ross' in the Phoenix area. TJ Maxx usually does not have any bargains. Just great stuff.
