    Did you ever hear of "playing Chicken". Two drivers (usually young men) drive straight at eachother in their cars. the one who first steer off that course to avoid a collision is 'Chicken'.

    We are a dysfunctional lot and dysfunctional people seem to feed off of dysfunction.

    We find the calm and rational boring these days.  We need excitement and finger pointing to assuage our guilt over our own behavior.
