For example. I see what status updates a few of my friends put up (that appear on my Facebook wall). Sometimes they are something about recent events and change.
I subscribe to the New Yorker, I get other news from podcasts, and I get news alerts from CNN.
I read some updates from news pages on fb and sometimes I watch news on the tv.
I mostly skim headlines from Yahoo and Google, along with listening to NPR when I'm in my car.
Frankly, the news is nearly useless nowadays. TV news doesn't have the time to give more than just the barest hint of the context of what's happening. A daily newspaper can at least give the rough framing (if they put the time and effort into good journalism). A weekly magazine is probably where time and resources become adequate to paint something resembling a well-fleshed-out picture, and I suspect for bigger more complex stories, a monthly journal is required to have the necessary lead time and ability to check back stories, historical sources, etc.
Hey, I heard on the news this week that the Turkish military tried to overthrow President Erdogan. So what? Who was behind the coup? What we're their motives? What are the political pressures and dynamics in Turkey which make a coup remotely possible? What was the effect of international influence on the coup? What does such a coup mean for US interests in the region, particularly the ongoing battle to contain ISIS?
No 3-minute CNN report or half-page story in the New York Times is going to tell us what we really need to know (assuming we're even interested. Most American care more about Kanye/Kim's beef with Taylor Swift).
I read niche (obscure and often banned) news sites. The Turkey coup is a fake coup created by Erdogan and his allies to give excuse to exterminate secularists and moderate Muslims in Turkey. Turkey is well on it's way to dictatorship with Erdogan himself an extremist wanting to bring back the 'Ottoman Empire'. Remember, the Armenian genocide (by Ottoman) is still not acknowledged by Turkey today. Just recently Turkey had major power changes in the administration. University professors (and scientists) are now banned from leaving the country. Rumour has it that a new Nazi-like regime is in the making. Rumour also say that the dictatorship is what the majority of Turkey wants (yay for democracy huh).
Take everything I said with a grain of salt, it's just what I've been hearing.
