    1. The first and foremost rule is DO NOT sit down. 
    Don uses 2x4s if there is an extreme urgency and he has to use one on the job site.  Even that is sketchy. 
    2.  Bring your own toilet paper and leave with your own toilet paper
    3.  If you know you are going to be at any function that you may need to use one, bring your own gloves if you have to touch anything
    4.  Practice your breathing before entering
    5. And finally, while driving to the event where you know you might have to use one, check out the nearest exit where there might be a restaurant that you can visit before, during and after the event.  Even McDonalds would be better than a port-a-potty.  Not much, but at least it will have a sink.
