Are your family get-togethers spontaneous or planned?

In my case since my uncle's family are neighbours to my parents getting together is usually quite spontaneous and routine. 
But there are "special occasions" which call for a "special" get together: like birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and other nice things as and when they happen.

    I've never been to a family get together. They all live up north and don't want to come down south to us and we don't want to go all the way up to the icky north so we just stay down here while they all get together up there.
