When mom was dying I was there while she was still alive. My sisters were constantly bickering and I got extremely stressed out because of them. I left, went and saw mom one more time, then drove back home. She died the next day. My sisters got an earful.
It would depend on the situation. A person who is dying may be in intensive care where only immediate family is allowed. Most hospitals say, "No visitors." I would probably call members of the family, send a card, or just offer sympathy. Traveling is not easy for many people because it's expensive, or they may not be able to make arrangements where they work. Distance is another problem. Therefore, it would depend on the situation.
