Have you noticed a trend of people drinking wine all day?

I just keep hearing people mostly women, housewives etc. talking about how much they love wine and everywhere I go I see joke gifts about drinking wine and even my mother who never used to drink seems to go through a case of wine with her friends like it's water these days.
She told me one of her friends came over and drank 2 bottles herself then got in her SUV and drove off.
I drink beer sometimes and I'm not perfect, but I just wonder if everyone's drinking wine out there these days is there gonna be a spike in alcoholism and drunk driving incidents or is there something I don't understand about this trend?

Alcoholism among the "ladies who lunch" has been a problem for quite some time. And now addiction to opioids has become problematic as well.

Issues with opiods often begin quite benignly. They're prescribed and legitimately needed. However, since they're commonly over-prescribed and highly addictive, problems can arise fairly quickly.

So far as alcoholism goes, there are those with a genetic predisposition but it can also be an attempt to medicate pain and boredom in any number of areas in their lives.

Therefore yes, DWIs and DUIs are certainly likely to be on the rise.

I think as many women drink too much as men.. it's not something that is confined to one or the other gender, I feel.  Women who don't work, arguably have way too much time on their hands and boredom and frustration/lack of fulfillment can be potent fuel to encourage people to turn to drink.  Men who work arguably have less free time but drinking too much can still be a problem after work/when they get home.. so it's not men or women per-se... each have their triggers... and problems...

Not all day, but I know drinking in the States is way up, and I can only speak to our habits because that's what I know. I think we're kind of experiencing a "perfect storm" of events. Salaries have gone up, but not substantially enough to cover what we're spending. Although people are divorcing less, there are also fewer marriages and the birth rate is down. All these things impact mental health and emotional wellbeing. Wine has always been the "glamorous" choice, and winemakers have really tapped into this with their marketing. They've also come up with sneaky ways to get it in the hands of everyone. First, starting with the screw-cap tops, then moving into smaller single-serve bottles, then moving into selling them in single-serve pouches.  I saw an ad the other day for a handbag with a built-in pouch and spigot. So, that's our older generations- largely unhappy and moving into the socially-accepted choice for drinking. Winemakers broke down the barriers with their packaging options. i.e. "I'm not a lush if I only buy single-serve." or "I have a box to share with my friends, so it's social."

At the same time, our younger generations, the millennials, they actually don't drink by and large. Some studies have shown they drink less than any other generation before them overall. However, they guzzle wine, and they top all other generations with their wine consumption. Again, it's the cool factor. Thank you, hipsters. Wine drinking, particularly with good wines, promotes exclusivity. In this "I'm a unique snowflake" atmosphere, being the cool person who discovers a new wine or winemaker makes you that much more special. So, the winemakers have found more ways to feed into this exclusivity by offering unique choices and uncommon pairings. Naturally, this feeds into the overall perception of wine as well. If the cool hipsters are doing it, maybe I should too. I wouldn't want to miss out. :o

  • I know right?
I swear it's everywhere these days and my mom only started drinking after my dad passed away and wine is her pastime now.
We weren't allowed any alcohol in the house at all growing up there, my mom hated it with a passion because my dad was an alcoholic in their early years but this wine trend has liberated her thinking I guess? LoL!
I don't care who drinks, goodness knows I've done my share of partying, but after working at a jail drunk tank earlier in my life I witnessed how badly alcoholism destroys lives and families and what a slippery slope it can be for anyone trying to cope with loss or depression so whenever I notice an alcohol related trend I worry a bit because alcohol is dangerous.
I hope it's no big deal and the wine crowd doesn't end up the drunk tank crowd.
