Why aren't people who hate Hilary and trump not talking about voting for jill stein (green party) or gary Johnson (libertarian party) or any of the other runners?

Is it because they're not popular?

They probably aren't even on the ballot in most state and they have no chance of winning

    Well let us see.

They don't have a prayer in hell of making it?   Now, that would not be a good answer if anyone from HELL was not running away with the vote, making it impossible to just make a show for a favorite that may gain future favors in elections to come.

To put it clearly.  Trump is running and may be President if we waste our votes on candidates that have no chance of winning.  We have plenty to lose when Trump wins.  I am not interested in anything GREEN right now.  I am interested in not starting a RED war or worse.

    Some do.

The problem is in our 50%+1 winner-take-all election system, voting for a third-party candidate simply strengthens the major party candidate LEAST aligned with one's political views.

For example, let's say HRC is leading Trump  49% to 45% (with 6% voting for various fringe candidates) and nominal HRC supporters equivalent to 5% of the voter pool decide to vote Jill Stein instead. Then Trump wins 45% to 44% (with 11% going to Stein and other fringe candidates).

Of course, because of the structure of the electoral college, this isn't quite how it plays out, but the principle is valid. In fact, the EC can magnify it.

Consider the 2000 Presidential election in Florida. If even ONE PERCENT of the people who voted for Nader voted for Gore instead, Gore wins. Similarly, if 1%-2% of the people who voted for Patrick Buchanan (many of whom may have done so by mistake) voted for Gore instead (which many of them INTENDED to do), Gore wins. If Gore wins Florida, he wins the election, and the past 15 years of US history is likely very different.

Go for it. Polls for Illinois indicate HRC has a 15%+ lead over Trump, so your vote doesn't matter anyway.

I live in Hawaii where a paper bag with a "D" on it would beat a GOP contender by 10%, so I haven't decided what I'm going to do. Maybe vote for Elizabeth Warren as a write-in?

No, it's because they don't have a chance in our Electoral College system.

Because they do not have a chance to win.  They are only seen as a protest vote.

  • If I vote in November, it will be for Johnson/Weld. A total waste of time and effort but sometimes we have to make a statement based on conscience.
