  • Steel Magnolias made me cry.


    Also when it appeared that ET died, I cried like a little baby......I was 21 when it came out, so I was really embarrassed at the theater, until I heard the grown lady behind me crying just as hard as I was. :)

    Some movies really reach in and grab at the heart. Recently saw one in a small community theater. Shook me up to the point that when it ended, I needed to stay in my seat and finish sniffling. As I was about to get up, I noticed that there was one other woman in the theater. She was on her way out and as she passed my seat, we made eye contact. I could see that there were tears in her eyes too. And for some reason, I felt compelled to grab her hand. Just for a moment. It was such a touching, uniquely human experience. And a tribute to the power of film.

  • I like movies that make me cry better than ones that make me laugh. It's a more raw emotion and kinda cleanses the soul a little.

    I cried in "Life of Pi" when the ship went down and all his family drowned - even though I'd read the novel and knew it was going to happen!

  • "Ladies From Hell".  This is a documentary about the Scottish Highland regiments in WWI.  There is real time footage of a battlefield and the amount of death is near unreal.  In watching it I had to consider those men would not get up after the filming and have lunch.     Both of these movies took me to the point beyond crying --  I was at a point of crying and both movies took me beyond, to just silent numbness and overpowering, overwhelming sadness.

    "Ordinary People"

    Was especially poignant after visiting Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel, where it was filmed.

    Been a long time since I saw "Ordinary People." Great film. And I really must check out "Dancer in the Dark" one of these days. I know how highly you recommend it.

  • A lady from Italy showed a group of girls from several nations an Italian film titled "La Vita E Bella". That is Italian for "Life Is Beautiful". It has a sad ending, so it made several girls cry. Its hero is a charismatic Jew whose family was imprisoned during World War II. He managed to hide his baby son and keep him hidden when the Germans executed the children in the prison. At the war's end, the hero is taken out to be executed as his son, now age five, watches from hiding. He mocks the goose stepping guard and is joking until the guard stands him against a wall and shoots him with a Schmeisser submachinegun.
