    It is called a "preemptive retaliation strike", and it is old hat. Not exactly logically defensible but it sounds good in speeches.

    A preventative war is launched to keep the other country from being strong enough to ever start a war against us. You may be thinking of a preemptive war which happens when another country attack is imminent. It can gain a strategic advantage.  I believe that the UN must approve if we were to launch the first attack without waiting for the other country to start the armed conflict.

    No  Ele.  Per the dictionary

    PREVENTIVE
    "Serving to prevent or hinder...preventive measure"  There is a preventative and a pre-emptive. I used the word I intended to use. Why others are second-guessing I haven't a clue but it's what they often do. Happy Saturday to you! :)

    The UN Might, The world wont. Alot of Amerikans have this rock-solid faith that everyone look up to USA in Admiration and envy. But have you noticed in the bottomads how often US Green cards get advertized? Wit Ads that particularly target Europeans. I can only read that as a sign that the nr of immigration applications from 'the old world' have dropped significantly.

    In the case of North Korea ... there is no "preemption".
    We have been in a constant state of war with them since the 1950's.
    That's why they still occasionally shoot at ships belonging to the US, South Korea, or other UN nations.
    It's probably also why the Chinese support them and are reluctant to embargo them ... because they allied with them in the fighting back in the 1950's.

    Prevention. Preventative. Pre-emptive. All those words mean the same thing. You do something to prevent something else from happening. So I don't understand why you say there is none vis a vis North Korea Walt. Could you  please explain what you mean? Thank you for your reply and Happy Saturday! :)

    As I pointed out ... we have been in a state of war with North Korea wince the 1950's.

    You can't pre-empt or prevent something that's already happened / happening.  Right?

    It never ended then? How many troops are there and where is the battlefield and how many casualties (on average) do we have each year? A war that no one knows about or everyone (but me) knows about? Well who is winning it? If what you say it true then the war in Afhanistan is NOT the longest war in which the US has been engaged. Right? Nothing is new under sun. Thank you for your reply Walt and Happy Monday. How many troops do we deploy to North Korea every year? Is that where old soldiers go to die?     That's right ... it never ended.
    We have over 10,000 troops serving along the DMZ.
    DMZ = "DeMilitarized Zone".  Which, of course, is HEAVILY militarized by both sides.  lol

    Neither side is winning, as we are stuck in a stalemate.
    Past policy has been if the North Koreans/Chinese cross the DMZ, we will use nukes.
    And if the US/NATO crosses the line ... China will pour across, same as they did in the 1950's when it looked like we would win.
    So everybody sits there, glaring at each other. 
    We broadcast propaganda from loudspeaker towers.
    They occasionally fire on our naval vessels.

    South Korea is willing to talk reconciliation with North Korea ... but the US, Russia, and China don't want that.

    Doesn't it? Whether you prevent, pre-empt or take preventative measures it means you strike first to prevent them striking first. I guess. It's a big fat mess. Thank you for your reply Ele! :)
