Here in Scandinavia you get paid to go to college, evening out the chances for the underprivileged to get an education and a better job.
I had to put myself through school so that sounds really good to me. I probably would have gone a lot farther in my education if I hadn't had to support myself at the same time. Wouldn't the benefits of socialized education outweigh the costs?
This is such a sin, you have unearthed. OF COURSE it outweighs the problems of spending on education.
Of course there will be people who try and take advantage of this system, but they should flunk out eventually.
Those who are serious, those who are receiving a decent education, will benefit. That can only help the entire nation. Educated people do not elect a Donald Trump for starters.
I was given a grant and a scholarship of sorts to go through the schooling I received. I still have to pay the grant back and it is not cheap.
And I was one of the lucky ones. Most people have to have the money and pray that they make it through school and work at the same time. I was spared that at least.

Education is paid for and free up to college level here.. A while ago they were experimenting with paying students from poorer families... I think it was a good thing ...don't think they still do that..
I wasn't sure what you meant by socialised education? You mean paid for? I think it's a good thing.. until relatively recently University was free too. they just introduced it in ENgland when my older son went.. he went to Wales because they hadn't introduced it there yet.. they did the following year...
SO I think it's a good idea.. and the advantages are ... that poorer households can get to uni... that everyone, (mostly) has the same chances to progress and achieve...to succeed. It was a great leveller... Education brings chances, opportunities.. choices...
Unfortunately this can somewhat devalue the degree system if everyone can get one or there are too many people with degrees.. MY sons had that problem.. both have degrees, one has a masters.. but they both seriously struggled to find work..
Even so I DO think it's a good thing and I DO lament that it's now getting again so that only the rich can attend uni :(
"Socialized Education" was probably the wrong choice of words. I mean enough Government support (social programs) to enable all deserving students to get degrees, and enough regulation to keep tuition, books and fees down. US Universities have increased the tuition costs because of the availability of financial aid. Also, a friend of mine worked as a textbook salesman and he admitted that new editions of text books are issued just to make the older editions useless (sorry, I almost said obsolete). I call that gouging and putting disadvantaged students at an even greater disadvantage.
Yep you are right on all counts there.. We too have seen the fees go from zero to £1300 to now something like £9000 in just a relatively short time... That has to affect poorer families.. and it does, and it has.. they are now saying that there is a shortage of students.. hmmm poorer kids are being nudged out because they don't have rich mummies and daddies to pay the fees. Text books are an outrageous price.
I'm not trying to sound anything. I was answering a question on a site that I get enjoyment from. If I do sound pitiful to you or any other COMPLETE F-ING STRANGERS on a very small, very anonymous website, I DON'T GIVE A F*CK!
I believe it's just Denmark that pays students. Denmark doesn't charge its citizens tuition either. I think the other countries other than Sweden charge anyone outside of Europe tuition.
