If you don't live in an open carry state you can get a permit to carry a concealed weapon. What does it take to get one?

I live in an open carry state but not city. Yes, conceal carry is available.  There is a background check and a class with a shooting test involved. 
I don't have a conceal carry permit but have thought about it. I don't own a pistol.
We own rifes and shotguns.
