    Sadly, fan clubs are alive and kicking and, even more worrying they don't just exist for celebrities..  Another, perhaps more realistic word for the more worrying forms of 'fan-dom' is cronyism - do you have that word there? It's where people band together, merely through ignorance and/or to try to curry favour with someone in power, or who is popular..
